Understanding Fraternity and Sorority Rush

Fraternities and sororities are undergraduate Greek-letter groups designed to offer social and academic and support for their members. The organizations originated in the late 1700s with the Phi Beta Kappa Society. About nine million students belong to fraternities and sororities. The National Panhellenic Conference has 26 sororities and 69 fraternities belong to the North American Interfraternity Council. Along with these larger groups, there are a number of smaller fraternities and sororities that are not affiliated with these organizations. What Is Rush? College kids who are interested in Greek life typically go through a ritual known as rush, which consists of a series of social events and gatherings that allow prospective and current fraternity or sorority members to get to know each other. Each institution has its own particular style for conducting rush. Rush lasts anywhere from a week to several weeks. Depending on the university, rush may take place prior to the beginning of the fall semester, a week or two into fall, or at the beginning of the second semester. At the end of this getting acquainted period, Greek houses offer bids to those students they feel would be the best fit for membership. Sorority Rush Women are usually expected to visit each sorority in order to meet its members so that sisters in the house can get a feel for their personality and determine if they are a compatible fit. Sorority sisters may sing or put on the show to welcome potential members when they visit. Theres usually a short interview for prospective candidates and those who make the cut may be invited back for an additional meeting that might include dinner or an event. If youre a good fit for the sorority, they will likely offer you a bid to become a member of the house. Unfortunately, some women who really want bids don’t get them and wind up with hurt feelings instead. You can always go through rush again, or if the process feels too formal, informal rush usually takes place throughout the year so you can have the opportunity to meet the sorority sisters and get to know them in a more relaxed atmosphere. Fraternity Rush Fraternity rush is usually less formal than that of sororities. During rush, prospective candidates get to know the brothers in the house and vice versa to determine compatibility. The frat may host some type of informal event, such as a touch football game, a barbeque, or a party. After rush, fraternities give outbids. Those who accept become pledges. Most frats have a fall pledge class and another in the winter. If you dont get in, you can always rush again. What Is Greek Life Like? Greek life is portrayed as one big party in the movies, but in truth, theres much more to it than that. Fraternities and sororities that participate in philanthropic work have raised more than $7 million annually for a number of charities since 2011. Theyre also very focused on education and often require members to maintain a minimum GPA to remain in good standing. However, socializing is naturally a large part of Greek life, with parties and events scheduled throughout the year. The chance to meet new friends in an organized atmosphere is a big draw when students consider Greek life. In addition, older frat and sorority members can mentor new students who are adjusting to life on campus. That mentorship proves to be important as students who join fraternities and sororities have a 20 percent higher graduation rate than those who dont. Fraternities and sororities can also have an impact after students graduate and are moving on to the career phase of their lives. Connections made via fraternities and sororities can carry over when youre job hunting and are especially valuable for networking. Even sorority sisters and frat brothers from colleges other than the one you attended will feel at least some affinity for a job candidate who shares their Greek connection. It may not land you the job but it can often get you in the door.

Potential liability of directors in case of insolvency includes been personally liable to all debt which has been entered by the company when it has become insolvent because section 588 G of the Corporation Act provides that a director must not engage in trade when the company has become insolvent or they have the knowledge that the company is about to become insolvent. In the case of Carrello as liquidator of Perrinepod Pty Ltd v Perrine Architecture Pty Ltd (Carrellos case) [2016] WASC 145 a claim was made by the liquidators in relation to insolvent trading against directors of the company along with the parent company with respect to Section 588G and 588V of the CA. However in this case the liquidator was not able to prove that the company was indulging in solvent trading as the standard financial statements did not depict conclusions in relation to the same. However when the company had adverse adjudication determination against it with respect to $1.06 million it was found by the court that it was indulging in solving trading. Therefore the court allowed the claim of the liquidators in part in this case. It is a well-established fact that every case has two sides. In the same way section 588H of the CA provides a few avenues in form of defences which the directors may rely upon against a claim of insolvent trading. Firstly it can be claimed by the directors that they had reasonable evidence which suggested that their company during the time of trading was solvent. Secondly there is evidence available to the directors which suggests that the company would remain to be solvent even if it enters into a particular transaction. Thirdly a reasonable person put in the same circumstances as that of the director would conclude that the company was solvent at that time. When a company is no longer able to pay its creditors and there is no other option to escape such debt the company has to be brought to an end by the process of winding up. The process of winding up is divided into two types which is voluntary winding up and involuntary winding up. In the process of voluntary winding up occurs when the members of the company voluntarily agree to the winding up of the company. In the process of involuntary winding up the company is wound up through force by the creditors (Brown 2015). There are two types of voluntary liquidation namely members voluntary liquidation and creditors voluntary liquidation. However the members can only avail liquidation in case the company is in a solvent state. In case of an involuntary winding up of a company the creditors force such winding up on the company because the company owns them a specified some up capital and is not able to repay it. The process of forcing winding up of a company is done through the court by the creditors. In such situation the court also analyses or misconduct of the directors in relation to the company (Innes 2016). Another option for the company other than being wind up by creditors would be to go into voluntary liquidation of the company by its creditors. As discussed above a member voluntary liquidation can only take place when the companies in a solvent state, however creditors voluntary liquidation can take place when the company has become insolvent. The most important advantage of a creditor voluntary liquidation as compared to compulsory liquidation is that better opportunities are provided by it with respect to protection against a claim of misconduct. Although the creditors voluntary liquidation is little bit more expensive as compared to in voluntary winding up from the perspective of the directors it can put the directors in a position where they can be help personally liable for the debts of the company and may also face consequences in relation to the career which would result in a far more drastic long term loss. The following article, Singapore: History is an internet article. The article, which is published on the internet, comes from the book Singapore 1994. The book itself is provided by the Embassy of Singapore in Washington D.C. Judging from the origins of the article; it could be argued that there is a certain level of accuracy in terms of its recounting of the Singapore history. However, although the information stated in the article is of high accuracy in terms of the dates, factual information and chronological narration of Singapores major events, the origins of the article, date of publication and its author is unknown. This could put the credibility of the source in doubt. This is especially so when a student who has completely no background knowledge of Singapores history. The student might have some difficulty in accessing its accuracy since the article did not have any author or origins to refer to. For an academic scholar researching on the history of Singapore, he would definitely have no problem in accessing the accuracy of the source, since he has a prior knowledge of the facts and information. However, as the article is too general, it would not have been of much help to the scholar in his scholarly research on Singapore. The article would be more useful to students who are doing some study into Singapores history and have enough knowledge to conclude that the article is of certain level of accuracy. It could be used as an academic piece of work for students at the university level. The information provided in the book is no doubt of a high level of accuracy. Every fact or statistical value that is being mentioned in the book by Turnbull has also been substantiated through the footnotes, ensuring scholars of its credibility and origins of information. It really aids in providing scholars with more areas to look into should he be interested in further research into a particular point that has been mentioned. All three sources mentioned about the developments of Singapore from the founding years in 1819 up till a certain period. The first article stopped at 1990 when Goh Chok Tong became the second Prime Minister. One could conclude that there are some tendencies for the first article to lean towards the political history of Singapore. The second book under review looks at the history of modern Malaysia and Singapore, providing more details. The last book narrows down the area of discussion further to that of just the Straits Settlement from 1826-67, which allows for even more in-depth content and knowledge. All three sources serve different purposes and hence it would not be possible to conclude which article is the most useful. However, if we were to go by the parameters set out in the introduction of this essay and define a scholar as a history student at the university level doing a scholarly research on the history of Singapore, the third source would definitely be the most useful one whereas the second book could serve as an introduction to the student.

Despite Townsend’s criticism, Lord of the Flies should be a required reading because it expresses the opinions of many people who have lived through World War II. One of Townsend’s main points was that The Lord of the Flies attempts to convert children to Golding’s way of thinking. He says about Golding, â€Å"he is†¦exploiting the thousands of students who are committed to the book† (2). Townsend truly believes that if a person is young and unwise he/she will take on the views of the author that he/she reads. In addition, he believes that the people who assign the book to students are guilty like Golding for sending out the wrong messages. He says, â€Å"teachers of literature and political science†¦have contributed greatly. It is they, after all, who assign the book and it seems that the book was first read (and still is read) as a required reading† (2). Also, Townsend fails to acknowledge that the book is not assigned to young students. We learn that government controls production in a society that teaches group interest over self interest. A student at LHS does not necessarily support the ideals of communism after reading about it. Almost everything a person reads will mo st definitely be written in a slanted point of view. Townsend fails to see that students are vulnerable to the views of elders, which is not true. Another main point made by Townsend was that Golding’s conclusion to Lord of the Flies did not support his thesis. Golding’s thesis was that man is naturally born with defects, prone to violence and corruption. The conclusion occurrs when the savage boys, led by Jack and Roger, chase Ralph attempting to kill him while burning down the island. While Ralph runs his life he maintains a panicky feeling as his heart pumps a thousand times per second when all of a sudden, out of the blue, he runs into a naval officer. The naval officer claims to have seen the smoke from the savage fire, indicating rescue. Townsend is clearly dissatisfied with the ending. In his editorial he points out, â€Å"We are still relieved that the book ends†¦far less unhappily than it might have had Golding either carried its fable out to the conclusion that would be most natural to it or followed the implications of his thesis to the end†(3). According to Townsend, the best way for Goldin g to support his conclusion would be to carry out the ending letting Ralph die. Because Ralph continues to live, he prevents more attackings by the savages, which contradicts Golding’s thesis that man would be prone to even more violence. On this issue, Townsend makes a valid point. The conclusion does not support the thesis. In the conclusion, Ralph, a good natured boy, runs for his life against the savage boys. To his luck he runs into a British Naval officer. The conclusion raises a battle between good and evil. If good defeats evil, then further violence will be prevented. On the other hand, if evil defeats good, violence is inevitable. According to Golding’s thesis, man is naturally prone to violence. By running into the British naval officer, Ralph defeats the evil in all of the boys when they are reminded of their civilized past in Britain. Ralph prevents further violence, as his life is no longer in danger. The ending to the violence contradicts Golding’s theme that man will naturally be violent. Also the fact that a British naval officer rescues the boys and not a German naval officer coincides with this point. It is another example of how good defeats evil. The British had an alliance with the Allies, who prevented the Germans from militarily or violently conquering the world Golding could have supported his thesis in the conclusion better by showing a continuation of violence with the death of Ralph. J.C. Townsend may criticize every aspect of Golding’s book, but Golding had to do something right in his book, otherwise it would not have been a bestseller. The book maintains the reader’s attention as the novel progresses with a lot of action from the meeting to introduce the idea of the rescue fire to the power struggle between Ralph and Jack. Although Townsend feels that conclusion was dissatisfying because Golding’s thesis was not supported, what conclusion to a novel satisfies a reader? No matter how the writer ends the novel there will always be readers who want a happy ending or readers who want a realistic ending. Furthermore, Townsend points out that Golding wrote a happy ending to his novel. Golding could have wanted to end the novel on a good note without realizing he would cause much controversy. This is one reason Townsend mentions that the book should be banned from schools. On the other hand it is important to read the works of people whose views are much different than ours. Golding lived during a time of war, which could have put the world into a different perspective for him.

(250-300 words) ESSAY History, literature, science and mathematics are all classic and very important subject in their own sense. No subject can be given more or less importance in life. However, in my opinion, studying science and mathematics are more important than studying history and literature. Firstly, science and mathematics are essential to most subjects. In other words, No matter which subject you want to learn, economics, finance or mechanics, you must have sufficient science and mathematics knowledge to understand it. For example, if person after studying science in secondary school, it is still possible to change lanes towards law at university, but if one only does the art subjects in school, one has no possibility of becoming an engineer later. My second reason is, studying science contributes abundantly to the human life. What I’m trying to say is, without science or mathematics, there won’t be any technology, which we will still be in our prehistoric days without it. Electricity is a typical example. How will we survive if the magical power vanished? Not only it’s used for lighting but to make most machines work. We need electricity like we need air to breathe. Although Shakespeare or Charles Dickens’s work are all very fascinating, but so are Newton’s laws of gravity and movement. And actually, without the creation of paper or pen, which is science, William Shakespeare wouldn’t exist. In conclusion, it is clear that the importance of science and mathematics have to be learnt is much more than studying history and literature. Science and mathematics should be the two most necessary and impotent subjects in our modern life.
